Hilma af Klint: The Swan Series in Context

One of the most challenging projects I completed in college was an editorial collection of some of Hilma af Klint’s works. The objective was to fully incorporate a select number of images of her paintings and sketches, provide correct captioning to these pieces, leave room for annotations, and include the body text. Each student had the freedom to format the files in whatever dimension they so desired, as well as select what type would best convey the information in the book.
I had one idea going into this project: each page had to be a square.
My Process:
As I continued to iterate through different page structures, I realized that I could develop a grid made up of additional tiny squares. This would allow for an ability to showcase Hilma af Klint’s artwork in their entirety. Additional, the grid structure allows the copy to be readable, both in their body and annotated form.
New Hero
New Hero’s geometric and clean lines are modern, clean, and legible. This made it a great choice for headings and captions, which would be used in a variety of sizes.
PS Fournier Std
PS Fournier is a revival of the classic French transitional typeface, Fournier. Thus, it would match the modernity of New Hero while differentiating itself as the body copy as a sans-serif typeface.
